The LIV Golf circuit has been creating all kinds of waves over the past few months as some of the best golfers have made the jump off the PGA Tour at the circuit supported by Saudi Arabia.

With big names such as Phil Mickelson, Brooks Koepka and Dustin Johnson choosing to take the big salary at LIVthe PGA Tour was put in the position of having to react with its own changes in order to keep those who remained loyal to their tour happy.

The changes were announced by PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan on Wednesday following a players-only meeting in Delaware last week that Tiger Woods attended.

Monahan announced that players with a PGA Tour card will commit to 20 events per year, including 12 high events offering prize money of $20 million and top 20 players, among other changes.

Lee Westwood, who was one of the first to make the jump to the LIV Golf Invitational Series, isn’t impressed with the moves.

“I laugh at what the PGA Tour players have invented”, Westwood says Golf Digest. “It’s just a copy of what LIV does. There are a lot of hypocrites out there. They all say LIV is ‘not competitive’. They all point to LIV’s uncut look and short fields .”

“Now, oddly enough, they’re coming up with 20 events that look a lot like LIV. Hopefully at some point they’ll all choke on their words. And hopefully they’ll be held accountable like we were at the start. “

Most PGA Tour events are 72 holes with 36-hole cuts, while LIV Golf plays with a 54-hole structure with no cuts.

Monohan also announced changes to the Player Impact Program (PIP), with the bonus pool increasing from $50 million to $100 million.

Westwood says LIV is simply following in the footsteps of how the PGA Tour has conducted business for years.

“I’m not sold on the strategic alliance because I’ve seen how the PGA Tour has fared over the years,” Westwood said of the alliance between the PGA and DP World Tour. “There hasn’t been a lot of ‘give’. They’ve always been bullies and now they’re getting their reward.

“All the PGA Tour has done since Tiger has been on tour is raise the prize money. In turn, that’s taken all the best players in Europe away from the European Tour. They had to play in the United States , taking everyone ranking points with them. That was their strategy: “Put in money. Obtain all players. Take all the world ranking points.” Which is self-sustaining. What we’ve seen over the past few months is just that LIV is doing what the PGA Tour has been doing for the past 25 years.
